Managing by feel instead of micromanaging
An expert CIO once explained:
I don’t have to micromanage because I just listen to what’s going on in various parts of the portfolio
I know what things sound like when things are as they should be. I know what it sounds like when things are not right
I’m like an expert car mechanic — I hear that rattle over there or buzzing or thumping and know it needs attention
Rather than constantly examining every part of my ship and driving my people nuts,
I can efficiently direct my attention to the problem
And jump in with help
I’m not alarmed or reacting to crisis. It’s part of why I’m here: to help with the inevitable problems that arise with overseeing a complicated business
Tuning into the machine with my intuitive brain is much more efficient and powerful than scrambling to analyze everything with my finite rational brain
And when I block time out of my schedule with nothing occupying the space, it allows me those key moments to tune in and sense what’s right and what’s off
This is the way of the right-brained CIO
