Many high achievers make lousy leaders

Many high achievers make lousy leaders
despite producing excellent results in the field.

The key differentiator is one’s ‘Identity’

Identity is how you see yourself, while reputation is how others experience you.

In order for others to want you as their Leader,
you must start by auditing how you see yourself.

THE COMMON BUST: many top producers see their value in one-dimension — results.

THE CURE: producers turned magnetic leaders all have one thing in common: they’ve moved past this one-dimensional sense of themselves.

Specifically, their ‘identity’ is comprised of many complementary facets.

Rather than derive pleasure and self-worth from the single dimension of commercial results, they equal-weight:
i) creating a secure base for their team,
ii) coaching their teammates to become their best,
iii) contributing to the governance of the firm,
iv) recruiting,
v) being a good spouse, a good parent and friend,
vi) contributing to the community.

A robust ‘identity’ allows one to live above the EGOTISTICAL FRAY and serve others who need their help.

Top producers eventually move on from directly producing into the coach position. While it’s one’s option to keep producing once having mastered the game, a lot of people will scratch their head at you — what ego dimension are you trapped in?

1. How can you broaden your identity and grow a more resilient sense of self?

2. What ‘doing-roles’ are you clinging to which historically brought you a sense of safety?

3. How is grown up, 40 year old you ready to let go of this old one-dimensional protective part of you and — instead — embody the multi-faceted identity of the resourceful adult you are today?
