You only have 30 quality working hours per week
You only have 30 quality working hours per week!
How do you figure out which ones those are?
.....
Take a blank sheet of paper - portrait and write M Tu W Th F. Now populate it with:
1. When are you available to start the day? After you've fed your kids / gotten them off to school, had a coffee and are at your desk ready to focus? For most of my PE clients, it's around 9/930/10am! Be totally honest and give yourself all the time you need.
2. What time do you finish to be home for dinner / put kids to sleep? Maybe you work late one or two nights or reserve one for client dinners
3. Block out time for lunch
4. Block out time for exercise
5. Add recurring weekly meetings: team meeting, meeting w boss, meeting w juniors, IC, coach call!
Ok, now what time do you have left? Generally, this amounts to ~30 hours M-F. Crazy isn't it.
Try it an let me know what you find?
And once you realize this seemingly crazy idea, how will you decide to use each hour? As you come to realize how little time you have, you'll have a new appreciation for how valuable your time is. And then you will guard it more carefully. You'll say NO to a lot of seemingly harmless calls / meetings. You'll delegate. By defining this boundary in your life, you can begin to feel separation between work and home.
Direct your assistant to schedule calls and meetings in your available free hours. Obviously, some circumstance may require you to operate outside these hours -- it's important that your mind now knows this is an "exception" and not an "expectation" -- it's special and one-off to work outside these windows. And if you're constantly violating these hours, it's a red flag to you that you need to be better with boundaries.
