Finance is not rocket science. It’s about velocity of ideas and efficiency of thought.
One of my most formative experiences was watching Richard Perry edit his quarterly letter.
He carefully considered each word, demanded clarity and simplicity in each sentence, and ultimately created a 1-2 page crisp statement on the portfolio and macro views.
What seemed so effortless and brilliant to the outside was the result of a 50 person team filtering it’s best ideas to the top.
By applying his spidey senses to what was filtering up, he was able to curate a differentiated view of the market, and simultaneously sanity check his entire team.
Even if he reserved the right to change his views days later, you always got a clear picture of where he stood.
The best investors speak in plain English in a direct format that is easily digestible. If you couldn’t tell Richard your investment thesis within 2 lines, you were in for quite a grilling.
As I work with clients today on presenting to their investment committees, LPs and portco CEOs, I channel Richard’s excellence and focus on quality of message and punch.
Why are we here? Why do we care? Why is our view different from market consensus. Cut to it!!!
How can you simplify your process to focus on what matters?
Finance is not rocket science. It’s about velocity of ideas and efficiency of thought.
